We take
time
trickle through the slow cold days
tending our iced hearts
until we can chuckle at Spring
We take
light
where we can get it, in the slanting rain
and make our arguments
more dry and vigilant than ever
We take
thought
for all the things hitherto unsaid
using our chances charily
while memory of the sun still serves
And despite all these pills
injections admonitions tests
results
one long dark night might be the longest
darkest yet
We might now take
respite
from all the old fights – but
how much more
while we have time light thought
can we, now honest, take?

Nine Times
I saw him nine times.
The first time we were both sitting in the room together, getting ready to take the math test that would determine our placement. I was scatterbrained and throwing things around, trying to find the pencils that I had known I would need but had still just tossed in my purse. He was lounging backwards in his chair, looking for all the world as though he didn’t have a single care in the world, including the upcoming test. It annoyed me, that I was frantic and ready to scream, while someone else could be that relaxed.
I tested out of the class.
I don’t know if he did.
The second time I saw him, it was a few m

Lessons for Today
Today in math class, they would be learning how to factor quadratic equations. Miss Gracie, called Mrs. G by her students, knew this because she had the lesson planned out meticulously across three-and-a-half sheets of college-ruled notebook paper, which sat neatly in a folder before her. She knew because, like with all her lessons, she had recited it in front of her dressing mirror last night, right before bed.
She glanced at the clock. Ten minutes left until class. Its tick, tick, tick was the only sound in the room.
She looked around the room. Nothing but the equation charts that she covered with long sheets of colored paper during tests

I'm-- so surprised, and so pleased.
May I share this with my friend? My very first thought was how much he would love it.
Variants of repetition, of course, will always make me happy. Time, light, and thought, taken-- describing our panacea.
"and make our arguments
more dry and vigilant than ever" --isn't that just the case.I stumble on "charily" just a little, but I think it's because I'm not used to seeing it... <3
But for me, it's all in the punch of your last line, and that last stanza. A different kind of "take" described. Retreat... And resources growing thin, that we must consider. "The old fights", making me tired even as I read, before asking me the important question.
Well done.
